Fairies & Dragons is a feature film musical that weaves the rich tapestry of Vietnamese folklore with the modern-day struggles of pursuing one’s dreams against familial expectations. The story follows Mai, the youngest daughter in a multi-generational household of Vietnamese-Australian women, who feels trapped between her family's wishes and her own passion for performing. Her mother, Hoa, is firmly rooted in traditional values, believing in the necessity of stability and security, which she expects Mai to achieve through a law career. Meanwhile, Mai secretly yearns for a life on stage, having been inspired by the enchanting stories of fairies and dragons from her childhood.Encouraged by her friends, Mai auditions for a musical based on Asian-Australian traditions and, to her surprise, wins the lead role. This success ignites her passion, but also plunges her into a world of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. As she juggles law school and the musical, Mai begins to question whether she truly belongs in either world. Her onstage love interest, Eric, encourages her to embrace her passion, but she continues to live in fear of disappointing her family. The pressure mounts when Chloe, one of Mai’s friends, reveals her secret to her mother, leading to a devastating confrontation in which Hoa disowns her. Faced with losing both her family and her dream, Mai almost quits the musical but, with the support of her mentor and friends, decides to finish what she started. Her powerful performance on opening night becomes a personal victory, affirming her belief in herself. While her mother remains distant, her sister Linh attends, offering hope for future reconciliation. In the end, Mai learns that following one’s heart is not without sacrifice, but it is essential to living authentically
